What Does “Listen To Your Body” Actually Mean?

What Does “Listen To Your Body” Actually Mean?

Today, I have an important question for you.

I hear ALL the time people telling other people to “listen to your body”.

What does that even mean!?

“I’m listening and ‘she’ told me that I should go on a 30 day juice cleanse.”

Oh really!?

It sounds good in theory and as you know, I’m the first to advocate listening to your body’s wisdom, but how do you really know if that is your body talking?

Or is it actually an emergency attempt to urgently drop some weight so you can zip up your wedding dress next month?

Ouch.

Where most people fall down is they don’t know how or have tools that work. And they lack discernment and commitment to learn the unique and subtle language of the body.

But YOU are lucky enough to be tuned here and have the potential to take this ‘listening to your body’ stuff seriously. If you’re committed to this process with me and have the the bravery to really ‘go there’, you can clear out the garbage that has been long buried in your cellular memory and actually listen to your body.

I’m here to stand up for your body. For its truth. And to challenge the illusions and question what is being taught and believed.

Together, we can really change the world and a deeper wisdom CAN shine.

Do me a massive favor and tell me you’re honest experience. Do you see people justifying their addictions and unhealthy patterns with fluffy language?

Use your voice, leave me comments and be bold in sharing your experience with this work and what you see that’s not working.

If you’re really ready to come out of the closet and make a stand for this next level, share this video & lets get this discussion rolling.

True change never came from doing the same thing over and over.

I’m leading a revolution where people can really listen to their bodies and be able to trust that inner wisdom because they know what that is and how to access it. Please don’t get allured by people who tell you they know what they’re talking about, but you actually don’t feel it. You are not a sheep. I know you have the capacity to be Super Human and I’m here to take you there :)

BAM.

Apparently I had a lot to say today! Must be the epic adventure! I’m now back in New York. (although if you’re staying up to date with my videos, you’ll see I’m still in Hawaii!) But I’ll be caught up soon!

Oh and if you didn’t catch the last WeDanceDay, check it out here, cos it’s a fun one! Oh I LOVE you Kauai friends and thank you for rocking Healthy Hut with me!

See you soon

SO much love

  1. Hi Laura,
Thank-you for your leadership and GENEROSITY in this area. For me listening to my body means listening to my intuition when it says no or not now. That has sometimes lead to something better or more natural happening. Listening to my anatomy is in it’s infancy but it means being revived by movement or sitting quiet and and enjoying the moment. I look forward to the toddler stage of listening to my body because the infancy stage is already pretty good.
    Thanks again,
    Doris Wakeman

I SO hear you Doris! i know exactly what you mean when the message of patience comes through loud and clear! Our body’s have a timing and process that needs to be honored and needs our commitment to listen and honor that journey. So happy you are here on this adventure with us! xo

  2. This is some of the most clear, grounded, explanations of how listening to your body really works I’ve heard from you Laura! I love it. :)

    • Laura says:

thanks Nath! yes, it’s definitely time to bring some fresh words and clear explaination to this essential topic. Much more coming! xo

Laura, I LOVE this message. So much. It is something I have been navigating in my own world. I know in my bones that my recent depths of awakening to my body and her wisdom have been a direct result of Wholly Shiftin with you (so, thank you for all that you do!).

I think there are many levels of listening to the body. If you are someone (like me) who has spent most of her waking life living a few feet above her body, re-inhabiting it is a process. I think listening to your body can look like going on a juice cleanse (if it is coming from a place of love rather than fear). It can look like food rules and parameters around exercise. There may be an element of abstinence that comes with first starting to listen to our bodies and I don’t think that is a bad thing. The beginning stages of listening to the body are where an element of trust and safety are born. And I believe this has to happen.

For me, the abstinence was an important foundation for tuning in but it’s definitely not the end game. I recently wrote a post on the difference between abstinence and attunement (http://katestefans.com/a-slow-lean/). Attunement is such a subtle process. And like Doris mentioned above, I am just in the infancy stages of really attuning. There are periods of sheer liberation followed by periods of utter terror (it would be far easier to let the mind run the show and cling back on). I am learning is that it is a daily, moment-to-moment commitment and honoring of her, my body, that catapults me into the sense of peace and satisfaction I so crave.

Thank you for opening this conversation. Thank you for being you. And keep spreading this message! Right beside you.

Thank you Kate. I feel you :) Thank you for listening and sharing from that place. Your word are powerful and speak so deeply to many on their process. I’m so grateful to support your shifting and returning to your home inside your body xo

  5. Lisa says:

Hi: If the question is “how do you listen to your body?” my response is that I mute it out — I purposely don’t listen. Sad but honest truth. I recently began to understand that a) that can only go on for so long until my body will stop functioning properly; and, b) it’s unnecessary to live in denial about how much power (read: all of it) to change things. I’m thankful for any help toward turning back on the music. Thanks for asking.

    • Laura says:

Hi Lisa, THANK YOU for sharing this truth. It’s so essential to be able to acknowledge where we are in the the process of this & I know you are not alone in ‘tuning it out’. The first step IS this and then from there you can choose to take the steps and leaps into the place where you can hear it’s sweet music again. As you practice my videos, let me know what else you need to support your song xo

  6. So right, Laura. Everyone is saying, “Listen to your body,” but you’re the first one to actually give some guidance on what that REALLY means.
For me, listening to my body first of all meant finding a place where I can be still, in body and mind, and tune out all the chatter, then carefully notice what is happening inside. Am I breathing? Is my body open and balanced? Feeling the breath and the flowing and the dancing.
It’s always a challenge to commit to this regularly every day- and that’s the key.
It’s easy to pop out of my body and into comparisons and judgement.
So I wholeheartedly welcome your support and insights… they shine light on what I know already, but you give me the trust in it all being just perfect.
And I know that listening, really listening, to my body, allows my body to really live in its power, and support all I do.
You have brought a true gift to the world. Love your work. I’m hooked.

    Hey Laura,

You make a very important point in the video about transformation, clearing out old junk, and how self-sabotaging programs are stored at cellular level in our anatomy itself. This is a powerful key, because it helps me to reach past the info about surface lifestyle changes that I learned in my training as a health coach, into my own heart, where my message as a transformational author and wellness professional truly resides. My inner voice was strangled by wires and tracks of old programming & junk, most of which I inherited and developed as my own. Before Wholly Shift, I could barely write what I truly wanted to say. But now I’m working on getting my first book published!

Your insight has allowed me to tune into myself at cellular level to share knowledge through a deeper, more heart-centered connection with my readers. That’s where transformation really begins, in the heart, especially since it has the most powerful electromagnetic field in the body. Before I met you, my body was getting healthy and my brain was as wizardly as ever, but my lion heart was shrouded in decades of pain and sadness. Now it is overjoyed and pulsing love & light. Wholly shift… Thank you for helping me reunite with myself! <3

  8. Elizabeth says:

    Hey Laura,
This is definitely something I have struggled with and been on a journey with, especially with food! Trying to eat perfectly, and then listen to my body (and eat Mac n cheese) – but I know my body desires the happiest highest vibing foods. I feel that I am doing a dance with the process, letting it guide me.

My work with you and in Wholly Shift has really helped me to connect to that magic inside. So much of the not-me has been removed, and I am starting to hear that magic 8 ball that is giving me incredible guidance and love.

So many incredible things have happened in my life, and I have these moments of saying – wow, I can believe this is my life!!

And also I can feel how I am just touching the surface of the magic and life experience possible for me. Thank you for helping to take me so much deeper and to connect with the true voice beneath all the layers. I am starting to hear it more and more and more … And I am so excited to go deeper and deeper and deeper.

  9. Megan Evans says:

Laura, I love your message, especially because it feels in line with my philosophy on clearing out the junk layers and re-naturing what’s underneath. I think that people often feel fear with change, and when they are tuning into their bodies, they tune into that fear and it causes sabotage. I also think when we are transforming, our bodies don’t feel so great at a cellular level (based on that it’s in a state of change), and the ‘not-feeling-so-good’ causes fear, and thus sabotage.

    Hee Laura,

    Great post/insight, down to earth!
When it comes to ‘listening to our bodies’, releasing the ‘crap’ and mindchatting… I wonder if you have a magic talk with innate how we can nourish our bodies in the best way (food). Some moments, I notice a ‘special’ request that comes up. What is your tip to tap into the deep wisdom around food choices (without the mind chatting/old patterning).
    Stay in our body?
Dance BEFORE deciding what to eat? ;)

    Much love xxx
